Hello Kinky Friedman fans everywhere.
As a big fan of the Texan Jewish Country singer- turned crime writer, I was very excited in 2008 at the prospect of a trip to New York and the chance to visit the great man’s home turf of Greenwich Village. Everyone says that today’s Village is so gentrified that it no longer resembles the louche artists’ quarter which features in Kinky’s novels. So was I disappointed?
No. While it’s true that the old Italian quarter is vanishing fast, squeezed out by high rents and the remorseless advance of Chinatown, enough of the neighbourhood the Kinkster wrote about remains to give his fans plenty of scope to explore his haunts in NY’s 6th precinct.
I am not sure the Kinkster himself would approve. He has said in the past that you can’t go back too much has changed. But enough of Greenwich Village has survived for you to people it with your own imagination. So what are you waiting for? This site takes you on a trip back in time to Greenwich Village in the early 1980s and what better place to start than the legendary 199B Vandam Street. (see first post)
